George Lynch is a writer and organiser based in London. This is the first instalment of a serial novel which she is self-publishing. The novel documents a night spent working overtime for no extra pay, wherein a group of workers who do not know each other well stay up all night together to finish work they don’t particularly care about. The situation is based on personal experience working a job on an insecure contract, and in telling it I am seeking to investigate the condition of individual subjectivity once it has been subjected to long-term precariousness, decreasingly available for attachment or belonging. Of particular concern, and the object of significant attention, are the ways in which the problems of precarious subjectivity become problems for the practice of workplace organising.
